Fermenting on grain question

Post by Parker36 »

So I'm doing my first ferment on the grain. Pitched yeast last night, good hard fermentation going this morning. A lot of the grain has risen to the top and essentially created a cap. Should I stir this back in or leave it alone?

I don't. More chance you will introduce nasties into the mix. But others have different opinions.

+1 to all the comments to leave well enough alone. Ive done it both ways, and noticed no difference in the product. Except when I dicked with it, I introduced more opportunity for shit to go wrong (bugs in).

Huge fan of not overthinking this. Keep it simple. Simple simple simple. Biggest problem I see with new folk is overdickin with the mash. Ive said before and Ill say it again, have confidence in what you cook up, THEN LEAVE IT THE HELL ALONE FOR A WEEK! :D
In theory there's no difference between theory and practice. But in practice there is.
