the McCoy family reunion

Post by just-a-sip »

well folks this is something i have yet to mention but felt that it was high time i shared.

I am as City as they come, clean shoes, clean cloths, nice car and always trying to keep up with the Jones'. my wife on the other hand is a southern Bell, and yes folks she is a 5th Generation McCoy straight off the blood line of Randell McCoy (don't hold it against me based off of stupid TV shows)

every year about this time, some 100-150 McCoys gather around in a state park in West Virginia and have a 3 day get together. i had the pleasure of attending this even the last 3 years running. we eat, we drink, we play horseshoes and cards, and of course have a formal reunion picnic on day 2 where we gather around hold hands and count off one by one to see how many are in attendance. we then talk about any new marriages or births for the family historian, and read passages from an old diary from some of the original feuding family, and before we eat a prayer is sad for all those past and present .

and as this time is one again upon me i, planned on bringing some goodies along to see what the old boys think. I of course will not be divulging as to the origins of this fine drink, as to many already know where i live and could presume i got it locally.

the reason i am writing this besides the fact of sharing a bit about me is i wanted to take the time to comment on a thread relating to the tv show of the McCoys and Hatfields. although i have never met any of the (so called head of the family) from the tv show i would like to dispel any ideas of them being as stupid as they are portrayed in the shows. the individuals that are depicted on tv are by far nothing like the god fearing kind people that attend the reunions. not sure why if they are the head of the McCoy family that they never attend the reunion, but that's a different matter all in its own.
Now i will say that when i first went to the reunion i had some misconceptions and thoughts about what to expect myself, but after meeting these people i found that other then their last name you would never be able to associate these people with the folklore and ideology of the family. there are of course (just like in any family) a few individuals that attend who we say "yup hes the real McCoy alright" but for the lot of them they are just good southern friendly individuals.

not sure what this post accomplishes, if anything, but just read a few comments that are so off base and stereotyped i had to jump in and say something.

Being from WV and close enough to have met a few of each McCoy's and Hatfields The show to me is just another attempt at trying to portray our heritage as something it is not. They are all good hard working folks down that way and I for one appreciate the post. Have fun at the picnic.

I appreciate your post as well . We have been stereotyped beyond reason . People all over the country have asked me where I come from . When I'd reply WV they would look down to see if I had shoes on . Then they would ask me some inane question and I would say ,'I don't know , I'll have to ask my wife.' And then I would turn to the truck and yell , ' Hey , Sis ! Come out here for a minute .'
If you ain't the lead dog in the team , the scenery never changes . Ga Flatwoods made my avatar and I want to thank him for that .
Don't drink water , fish fornicate in it .

I can be a city slicker just a good as I can be a redneck. Just give me a good check and I'll make Gommer Pile look like a rocket scientist!
Or I could make "The most interesting man in the world" look like .......well, he would still be interesting. LOL you get my point. Be proud of your wife's heritage no matter what the conflict in the past and have a great reunion!

posting at the same time as TB. He cracks me up!
