Re: Buy in Bulk
I calculate just under $44.00 a quart or just under $35.00 a fifth plus you end up with a 55 gallon barrel. Sure saves a lot of money in bottling costs for the company not to mention storage and aging!

It'd go up to about $2700/qt if you add in the liver transplant.

Corene, was that baby loaded with barrel strength? 62% Or did they drain some out and bring it to 40%.
In theory there's no difference between theory and practice. But in practice there is.

Re: Buy in Bulk
Well, if we make the huge assumption that this barrel was warehoused in a place where no alcohol evaporated and had a starting point of 62.5% alcohol, and a 53 gallon barrel, we're looking at 4240 ounces (33 and an eight gallons) of 100% alcohol.
That gives us 10,600 ounces (~313 liters, 418 750ml bottles) of 40% alcohol. If you want it at 43% like I might remember Jack used to be, you're looking at ~9860 ounces (291 liters, 389 750ml bottles) of 43%.
That gives a price of $22.93 for 40% fifths and $24.64 for 43% fifths.
If this is a 55 gallon barrel then I'm even more off.
And I'm obviously off if the angel's took any share, which I'd say is a given.
WOW! My math was terrible. Please forgive me. I'm correcting it now.
BTW, these numbers have no basis in reality and are just imaginary, based on a hypothethical where there is no alcohol evaporation at all.

Re: Buy in Bulk
Hmmm. I came up with $36 per fifth for 124 proof barrel strength, or $23 a fifth for 80 proof after watering it down. $23 is in the ballpark for fifth. If they watered it down then $36 a fifth is highway robbery, can buy half gallons of jack for less.
Barrels are 53 gallons.
Edit: ON second thought, best case, not watered down, $23 a fifth is still a royal screw job. Half gallons (2 1/3 fifths) are $33 around here.

Yeah, you're right. I'm an idiot and my original math was terribly wrong. Was posting while you were, or I would have left it striked through.Jimbo wrote:Hmmm. It didn't say 80 proof anywhere so I am assuming it was at whatever they barrel it at. Now you have me thinking, Most of thier whiskey is blended to get the final flavor so this barrel could be a really good barrel or maybe not so good. AND even if it is a really good barrel of JD I still wouldn't like it, not my favorite drink for sure.Jimbo wrote:Corene, was that baby loaded with barrel strength? 62% Or did they drain some out and bring it to 40%.

If my experience with Jack is typical, You could start and win a war with that barrel.

Y'all forgot to calculate the cost if the cola you have to buy to mix with it. That's the only way I drink jack.

Re: Buy in Bulk
I went to Jack Daniels this summer.
You can buy a single barrel direct from JD for a lot less than that AND you get your name engraved on a SINGLE BARREL wall on the ground floor of the distillery,
I don;t know if FED taxes have to be added to their price to bring the barrel home across state lines.
