Mason jar thumper ?

I'm making an 8 quart pressure cooker still and wasn't going to make a thumper for it but I've read or heard somewhere that you could make a thump keg with a large mason jar for this small size still. My question is, I can make one but how safe is this Idea and would you use this idea ?

Short answer. No it is not safe nor big enough to use as a thumper. And the fact your building a 2 gallon still. Shows you haven't done much reading around here. It's also to small to work worth a hoot. And will make learning to make cuts a lot harder.

Glass thumpers most consider unsafe.

You may find cuts a little difficult with small boiler.
Stainless I hope.. not aluminum.
Have you removed the rubber/ silicon seals ? If not replace with Teflon.

Looking for something smaller around 5 gallons maybe, something I could do in my kitchen or garage, and I've done a lot of reading on here for the last few months but I can't remember everything at once, just not that much memory

Bigmanley, Take a look on E-bay at SS milkers. They are 5-6 gallons and already have 2 holes in the lids so they are easily modified to make a still. The biggest problem with them is that also have a rubber gasket but that is easy enough to fix. I have one of these as my thumper, and it works great.

One thing nice about this forum is there is the HD Google search button top right center. So you don't have to remember everything. You do have to take some of your own time though to read more. Also may I suggest that when you do a search to read more than one post because of the age of the post or the fact that some of the less experienced people here sometimes post the wrong answer.

One thing that also works well, is the cheap 5g boil pots, with a rim that sticks out (flat), and a flat lid extending out to that rim. Pretty easy to seal these up with flour paste, and a few black paper clip things. This type pot, or something similar: http://www.homebrewing.org/product.asp? ... I think rad has instructions on making a small stovetop still, with a cookpot similar to this. I know there are many theads with pix, where people made them like this. I know a lot of people 'think' the pressure cooker is a good thing to make a still out of, because the lid 'locks' down, and there is already a hole in the lid. However, usually the pressure cooker is not the ideal boiler for a still.

They say 1/3 the pot size right? Well 1/3 of 5 is 2.44444444XXXX, SO I round it off to 2.5 and that's EXACTLY what the size of that milk container I just provided a link for! Hope this helps somebody, keep boozing and cruising (in the woods of course!) :Shh:

1/3 of 5 is actually closer to 1.66666666667. The 2.5 number is half of five. But....... that is an even better size for your thumper.
