NEMA 10-30 outlet...deathwish?

Post by Hoodlums Hooch »

Hey, to all of you knowledgeable folk out there. Long time no post but I've been here peeping around. Anyway, I just purchased the Still dragon diy controller. Its the ssr40 with pot in a 10x8" plastic box. I haven't assembled or wired it yet because I saw something that freaked me out. I was planning on running this setup plugged into a Nema 10-30 3 prong, 30 amp line, with a 5500 camco lwd element. My fear is that the ground technically isn't a ground. Its a hot hot neutral setup which means the neutral essentially is the ground. My dryer works just fine off it and technically its legal. Just wondering if when I get everything hooked up if I'm in danger of frying. Any suggestions would be great...thanks guys and girl

I have the same controller, You will be fine to hook it up like that. If you look at the wiring in your circuit panel you will see that the ground wires and the nuteral wires are hooked into the same BUS anyways. So essentially they are the same. Just be sure that your boiler is grounded also.

Thanks OBX. And by grounding the keg you mean running that neutral wire all the way to the keg and fastening it with a screw drilled into the keg right? I was also going to ground the SSR by splicing off of that same neutral/ ground inside of the controller box. That's OK right?
My fear was that because they say some small amounts of current are carried thru that line, I was thinking that I may experience a shock. At least that's what I read on the nema wiki page. Thanks again for your input

Yes branch the same neuteral/ground to what ever needs grounded. And yes by grounding the boiler I meant hook the neuteral/ground wire to the boiler.

Happy to help!! :D
