CARLO ROSSI WARNING !

Post by Truckinbutch »

I've got several Carlo Rossi 5l wine jugs that I have been using to store strip runs and then transport spirit runs from the still house to the kitchen for cutting and blending . Saw a small crack in one a couple months ago and discarded it at once . None of them have ever been subjected to high or extreme temperature fluctuations or rough handling .
Carried one in this evening full of 65% and set it down on a kitchen counter to deal with tomorrow on account of I am too tired to fool with it tonight .
Sittin with SOH visitin in the livingroom area when we heard a crack .
WHOLE DAMN SIDE HAD POPPED OUT OF THAT JUG AND DUMPED 5L OF 65% ALL OVER THE KITCHEN FLOOR ! Thankfully , the gas stove was not lit . WE got the mess cleaned up without further issue , thank goodness .
We are only out 5l of damned good drinkin and the effects of the adrenilin/blood pressure spike
Tre remainder of those jugs are going to become rock and rifle targets for the grandkids .
If you ain't the lead dog in the team , the scenery never changes . Ga Flatwoods made my avatar and I want to thank him for that .

Same thing happened to me but it was 90% in my garage. I thought it was that it was too full but now i know it wasnt my fault with the carlo rossi jugs.

:| 5L Gone... :|

I am sorry for your loss. I lost 2L once and still think about it. Maybe it's all for the best, before this post turns religious :silent: I will end it saying I feel your pain.

Have fun shooting them jugs! Shoot one for me!

I got some still in use from when I got started. I wonder what gives on that? Did they change glass vendors ? Or simply an isolated incident?

Just out of curiosity was that jug open on top and breathing, or was it sealed up?

I'm asking because I noticed two other threads this very week mentioning glass jars shattering. Both of those were sealed shut and it is believed that too much vapour pressure with too little head space was the reason. None of those other posts mentioned the brand name of their glass, but it would be interesting to find that out.

Thanks for the condolences . No , the jug today was not sealed tight . The first jug with the crack developing had no lid on at all when the crack developed . That 5l loss represented a hell of a lot of labor on my part . I
was fixin to bring some of that over to the Liar's Bench to share .

I have a bunch of 4L C-rossi wine jugs. Yes, cato failures do happen from time to time. Be VERY careful and avoid clinking them into each other, and if you want to set them on to a hard surface (like my concrete basement floor, put a thin towel (dish towel, etc) down first, and set them down gentle.

The bottles are VERY sturdy, until they are not. When they do let go, it seems like they are about as strong as a hydrometer, and simply break like you mentioned. If you do have one of them clink hard (slight drop), of clink 2 of them toghether hard, it is best to scrap them. They may have no damage at all, but you NEVER know. Yes, if you dump out 4L of 95%, it can be VERY chilling event!

I have had 2 bottle break over the years. One was aging 60% (and I about cried). The other was sugar water, corn staged to be used.

They very useful bottles, but glass is glass.

I know that's gotta hurt, while checking proof one evening I discovered a crack in the bottom of my cylinder, lost maybe 20ml, I almost cried.

I'v got several half gallon liquor bottles and old 1 gallon vinegar jugs that I am going to put into service tomorrow . I have more faith in them .
(HEADSCRATCH?) Been thinkin , bad thing maybe . Rather than totally waste those jugs to no profit , perhaps I should teach the grandkids how to go fishin with big glass jugs and calcium carbide . Been a while since we had a fish fry .

spewing never lost that much at that proof and hope I never do(still haven't recovered from the JB bottle of plum brandy that shattered in the car). can ya get the old earthenware demijohns over there, they come in 1 gal up to 5 gal I got a few plus a heap of crocks. I love em coz they are insulated light proof and ya need a centre fire round shot dead centre to chip em, break one and all I can say is you were trying mighty hard

 funny that.

Thanks for the warning, I have a few older style gallon cider jugs (nice wide mouth fits 1x1x5" oak sticks) Ill check them close.

I found a new source of storage glass thats working out good. Up north here we have a place called Oberweiss that sells half gallon milk and various lemonade drinks in very sturdy recyclable half gallon jugs. They charge a deposit but its small (lower cost than buying quart jars). They have a nice handhold recess on the side too, and very thick glass since they refill them. They dont fit the oak sticks, but for feints, white drinks or already aged up stuff they're perfect.
In theory there's no difference between theory and practice. But in practice there is.

Kinda off topic, but the biggest mess I've ever seen was on a U.S. Navy vessel. We had just left port in Corfu Greece where I had been invited to a local wedding party. I was the only American there but that was not a problem. I loved the hospitality and when the party was over the bridesmaid presented with a bottle of their home brewed wine. I sneaked the bottle back aboard ship and hid it in the top of my locker. A few days later the bottle exploded and a great red wine soaked thru my officer's dress white uniforms, my white skivies and even my dress white shoes. The word spread and I was busted for alcohol aboard the ship.

When my CO told me he was going to put a letter of reprimand in my jacket, I said "Well, I guess a letter of reprimand is better than no mail at all." I've never seen a man laugh so hard. When he finally regained his composure, he told me to get the f*** out of his office and said I ain't going to send you any mail!

All's well that ends well.
