Yes, wood alcohol is not really present in a sugar wash.

You know wood alcohol (isopropyl alcohol) and methanol are two completely different substances. Right?

Wrong way round there bearriver. Wood alcohol is methanol, ie alcohol obtained by fermenting woody plant tissue like grape vine stalks and the skins of grapes, etc. Isopropyl alcohol is "Rubbing Alcohol".

I think many of us here in the states. Were misguided on wood alcohol. It's also not a term that is used much at all here in the states. Methanol is used quite often. But when you are tought that wood alcohol comes from a very different process. Then it actually does. In high-school chemistry. You would never think they were the same thing.

And here I thought my friend's mom was drinking wood alcohol all these years when she ran out of booze.

Nope, its just isopropyl.

Are you sure? :wtf: :wtf:

I doubt very much she was obtaining and drinking Isopropyl Alcohol. This is a practice not recommended so your use of the words "just isopropyl" gives the wrong idea that it is not so bad to do it.

If this poor woman had a serious drinking problem, she may have been drinking methylated spirits or denatured alcohol, so it was Wood Alcohol, but it wouldn't have been doing her much good, health wise, that's for sure.  Either way.

Metho is 95% ethyl alcohol, "denatured" with 5% methyl alcohol, to deliberately poison it. That's nearly pure Ethanol (what we aim to make) and Methanol (what we aim to remove) and it is in the purity strength that should not be consumed.

Serious alcoholics used to mix Metho with other liquids (typically OJ) to cut it's strength, and possibly still do.  As a kid there was an old lady who lived nearby. She used to come to her front gate and ask passing children on pushbikes to go buy her a bottle of metho. Every kid in the area knew her as "Metho-lady". My parents owned the nearest general store and we were always vigilant about not selling it to kids unless we knew the parents or had authority from them in the form of a written request.

Over here it used to be a clear, colourless liquid but it is now coloured fluoro purple.
