Shine blow up!!!

Post by East Coast »

I have had a bottle of shine blow up on me.

what would cause this?

could it have been a weak bottle?

Shine or wine ???
If wine -still fermenting
If shine - temperature shock or Pressure differential caused by temp. eg distill out side in cold, cap bottle and bring into warm area.

Weak bottle is also possible. ( avoid hanging together)
More info would be useful
What goes up must come down, but a condenser helps

At 100degF, the vapour pressure of ethanol is about 2psi, at 150degF about 8.6psi, neither high enough to burst a good condition bottle. If there's no vapor space, the bottle is tightly stoppered and it gets hot the liquid expansion will make or find a leak in most any bottle.

Had it to full. And it warmed up. Expanded and blew the bottle out. Have had it happen.

When filling a bottle. Leave plenty of head space.

All the reasons above could be the culprit . I've had two Carlo Rossi 4l jugs fail because of poor quality .
If you ain't the lead dog in the team , the scenery never changes . Ga Flatwoods made my avatar and I want to thank him for that .
Don't drink water , fish fornicate in it .

This is one of the reasons I prefer to cap with (decent not composite) corks and a dollop of wax - if it gets too hot the cork just pops out, minimal losses  (+ no broken glass and flammable liquids everywhere)

Yesterday I had a 6 gallon carboy full of wine crack and lost it all. It was in my unheated garage with an airlock on it so it wasn't a matter of pressure differential. What a waste.
