large fermenter airlock
Have been fermenting in 5 gallon buckets with standard airlocks and just upgraded to one large 30 gallon container. Before I blow anything up what is reccomended for an airlock? The barrel has a sealed lid with lock ring. One thought was to use the old school method of attaching a tube (3/4") to the lid run into a jar of water.

If you insist on having one PP gets a +1. I already mentioned to you about just putting the lid on the bucket and leave it be. That is the unique thing about this hobby. It can be as simple or difficult as one chooses to make it. The less I have to keep up with the better it is for me.

Re: large fermenter airlock
just leave the lid unclipped.. no need for an airlock unless your fermenting complex sugars over more than a week or 2.
Re: large fermenter airlock
Yup, just leave the lockring off. The airspace fills with CO2, which is heavier than air and settles over the mash. If you ever got a snout full of CO2, you know no bugs are going to willingly crawl in and have a party in your mash.
In theory there's no difference between theory and practice. But in practice there is.

Re: large fermenter airlock
Well, the barrel looked like a pill. I was just going to "ease" the ring open and let the pressure bleed off. Sumbich exploded and the lid rim hit me In the forehead. Damn near knocked me out. Luckily the lid wasnt damaged! LOL

Re: large fermenter airlock
thoughts on this..... i have a 3rd generation UJSSM fermenting in three 5 gallon buckets. i would like to employ my new 30 gallon fermenter after i run the 3rd gen wash this weekend. what i would like to do is combine the contents of the (3) 5 gallon buckets in the new fermenter and then add new components to top off the fermenter (additional yeast, grains, and sugar). am i asking for trouble interrupting the current culture i have created or is it ok because i am adding the exact same grains, yeast and sugar. i would like to get 3 mores gens out of this batch but would like to do it in larger QTYS.

Re: large fermenter airlock
It will be fine to do so. Do not add but about 80% of the original amount. Do not add hot backset or sugar water to a minimal amount of liquid in the fermenter to avoid killing the yeast. Remove all floating grains and replace with the same amount in each of the five gallon buckets and in the large fermenter during future ferments.

You can use a mason jar for an airlock

Re: large fermenter airlock
Never put grape wine in a beer keg with the lock ring reinstalled and forget it. The wine will verment and highly pressurize the keg. Just to release all the pressure you will get a geyser of at least 10 gallons of remarkably fresh wine!
