Silver Solder

Post by permethrin »

Would this be the correct and safe silver solder for joining stainless to stainless and stainless to copper? http://www.weldcotemetals.com/dataFiles ... er56CF.pdf" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" rel="nofollow
I believe this is the exact same makeup as harris safety-silv 56 I am just trying to confirm this.

Yes , that is the good stuff. 56% silver. just remember it flows right around 1200 degrees so get the proper high temp flux for it also . I myself use the Harris safety silv 45 and the Harris safety silv paste flux. It is VERY strong when done properly. You may have to use Oxy Acetylene setup I don't think a smaller propane torch will get to those temps on a large surface , but I don't know I have always used my oxy acet setup. It is pricey though. I have also had very good results with Harris Staybrite 8 silver bearing solder. Lower working temperature also.

Thanks for the info. I have the Oxy-Acetylene setup at my disposal so that is not an issue. I was thinking of the staybrite 8 but as this is the only project I am doing that requires this it's cheaper for the 56% silver even though I am getting less. The other copper to copper joints will be either done with dynaflow or stay-silv 15 scraps that I have around or regular lead free solder. From what I've read dynaflow and stay-silv 15 should be fine for copper to copper joints. I know what filler rods can be used for certain metals I am more concerned that I am picking fillers that are safe to use when exposed to alcohol.

I just screwed up while silver soldering a fitting on a corny keg. I got the SS too hot and several small cracks appeared after it cooled.
My fault, should have been more careful.

I may be wrong but I dont love the "other elements .015%" line

The MSDS for the SafetySIlv56 I use lists silver, copper, tin and zinc. Thats it. Prob not an issue but you never know.

That was good for soldering that kind of metal. Surely, it will have a good result.
