Munton and Fison Ale yeast

Post by MadMasher »

Has anyone used this? All my ferments using baker's yeast stalled and I'm tired of trying to keep them warm so I went to the LHBS and this was the cheapest ale yeast. Also got some red star wine yeasts.

Seems the beer forums dislike it. We'll see in a week or so...

I have switched to ale yeasts before with mixed results

some people love them, some people hate them

now that I have a better way of heating my washs (fish tank element) (or putting them in an old chest freezer with a heater)
I have no need to play around with yeasts

But it is good to see you trying different things, I do not know how cold it is over your side of the world but you may still have to put some type of heat on, even for an ale yeast

I would also ask the feller at the homebrew store, if the yeast don't work can you get a refund (always proof the yeast by making a starter)

for beer i agree with the forums that it can be a bit too english (musty fruity flavours)- especially if fermented too warm, no idea what it will be like after stilling though
Q: What do you call a scotsman thats given up drinking?

It has started just very slow in my ujsm. I read it doesn't do too well with processed sugars so that could be part of it. I usually use whitelab liquid, either chico or irish ale and they do great at the temp in my room with basic ujsm and some bourbon AGs. Its always 68-73F according to my thermometer with high and low, so I don't see needing to heat it as that's the recommended temp range.
Thanks for the input, I'll post again after I run it about the flavor it imparts.

Never used that one specifically. But Im a big fan of the clean fermenting ale yeasts like US-05, WLP001 Wyeast 1056 and others

When I used fruitier english style yeasts the results were good, but it was difficult to make cuts. The fruity esters blur the lines between fores, heads and hearts.
In theory there's no difference between theory and practice. But in practice there is.
