Rum Barrel Oak Chunks

Post by hitek redneck »

Was at Crappy Tire today(Canadian tire,hardware/tools/automotive parts place for none canucks) when I come to the newly set out BBQ section along with their smokers. So I am thinking well lets see what the prices are for smoker chips this year. As I glance through the section something magical catches my eye. Maclean's Authentic Rum barrel smoking chunks. The description on the bag says chunks are cut from retired Rum barrels from the Caribbean with years of aging on pre-toasted white oak. Alarm bells go off in my head, could these be the glorious offering that will match the JD chips for whiskeys? Well only one way to find out.

So as we speak I now have 1 500ml bottle of 65% Rum sitting on shelf with 1 large chunk floating nicely in it. I have no idea how this is gonna turn out but if these work like the JD ones then this might be a real good alternative to full oak barrels for people that might not have the room for one. I will update as it sits over the next while. Should be interesting to see how this project works out.

Also for the rest of the Canadian likker makers they have Wine, Bourbon, and Tequila barrel chunks now if your interested in trying.

I bought a whole bunch of wine barrel staves. That were sold as smoking wood. They didn't sell so I got them off the Clarence isle. I probably have 6 bundles of them. I usually post the other three sides. I cut them in half. So they fit in the jars. They work good. I would like to find some rum ones. That would be nice.

How big of chunks are they? Mine are staves cut in half or thirds more likely. Then cut long ways about 1" square.

They are from about 2" square to about 1" by 3" in size in the bag I picked up. The ones I have taken out and looked at are all cut short ways across the stave by the looks of it.
