Chevy Steering Column "Clunking" Fix !!

Post by sltm1 »

I have an 06' Tahoe that has an intermittent knocking noise when driving slowly over rough road or turning at slow speed, almost sounds like a bad strut noise. This noise is found in most 2000-2007 +- GM large vehicles an is caused by the intermittent steering shaft in the steering column...the permanent fix is both cheap (less than $80) and easy to do. I have the parts ordered, both the steering column set pin tool and the replacement unit. Here's a pictorial step by step on fixing the problem for all you "shade tree" mechanics.

I would also check your sway bar end links. This is a common cause for the same symptoms you are describing.

Edit: In fact, I would do a little experiment, while you are waiting for parts. Disco your sway bar end links, and go drive around. Nothing aggressive, mind you. Just normal neighborhood stuff. I'd bet your clunking goes away. My rear sway bar on my TB is perm disco'd, and I have no problems. My fronts are still connected, with rebuildable disconnects.

Thanks for the tip on the "extra", potential problem...I spent almost a whole day removing and replacing a single ty rod end on my old 53 Jubilee tractor this summer (gotta love rustedf parts)....think I'l try the easy fix first and go to your's next if it don't work. BTW, we only have 53K on the vehicle so ,i think it'd be a mite early for the problem you suggested.

No, its not too early. 50k to 100k is a good window for end links to start going. I had a brand new set of MOOG's fail on me, within 1500 miles. Hence, my perm rear disco. Gives me more travel for offroading, as well.

The steering column is a common problem on the GM midsize cars also, it can be temporarily fixed with removing the steering shaft and force packing with white lubriplate grease, but usually returns a short time later. I've only had 1 truck that had it and the owner didn't want to fix it. I have done several Impalas though.
