Oz ditched the one and 2 cent coins back in the early 90s on account the low monetary value and the fact it took say 10c of cooper to make a 1 cent coin  I think our old pre decimal (pre 1966) pennies and halfpennies were mostly copper but darned if i'd use them as boiling chips. Lets face it off cuts of copper are easy to obtain otherwise a few marbles will work a treat

Shame on you. It's your fault I had to do a Goggle search to find out what a "numismatist" was.
I'll drag that two dollar word out tomorrow and use it on my coworkers.
 :D :) That was a great one!!!

Anyone?
Dan, I throw a hand full of lava rocks in my boiler. I have boiled with and without and I am not sure if it does any better or not. I can't hear a damn thing over the roar of the propane burner going. I guess I just do it to go with the flow. :econfused:

Copper fittings, marbles and chunks of deglazed (weathered) clay flower pots work just fine.

Use your pennies to buy some marbles. About the cheapest thing out there that's non porous and has a lot of surface area.
Copper is more effective in the vapor path than submersed in liquid.
The forum google search is what they are refering to. Its in the upper right hand of every page. And i think you are confused with the marbles. The time you need the chips is when your boiler is smooth and need something cragley for vapor bubbles to form on. That being said there have been studies showing that copper can be more beneficial in the boiling.
No sir, no confusion. Media in the bottom is to prevent spontaneous boil. This could lead to foaming and puking. With the bubbles forming on objects they are more likely to start from a small simmer to boil instead of instantly form an overwhelming boil. Porous media is harder to get clean, why I suggested the cheapest form of store bought items to break the boil I know of. Not arguing with you buddy. I have always ran traditional copper pot stills. Less cleaning is needed below the liquid line than the vapor path. I can see folks running little to no copper at all wanting to increase it but if that's the case they'd trap the nasties better with copper mesh in the column or cone.

As for the google remark. Well I was just being a smart ass to no one in particular. About every thread I read has that on it. Folks that have been at it for a year or two acting like experts when the new folks might not even know what search terms to put in to begin with. Just the way I was raised I guess. You help folks out if they need it. If you think you're above them it's best to just keep your mouth shut. Folks forget they were at the same place at one point and someone helped them out. Like I said nothing personal towards you buddy. It's just the nature of things on the internet where folks won't take a few minutes to help someone, would rather add nothing to a conversation to make themselves feel important.

Have a good one.

This one is killing me! These are kids toys? Why the hell should you buy your kid plastic pennies for three and a half times the cost of real ones?!?! I don't comprehend the logic in this toy. Obviously people out there buy them too because there is a market to self them! Send them my way, I'll give them a real bargain and age them METAL pennies at 100 for $3 even!

I never understood why people think that this is weird...is the the mint supposed to make a profit as it coins money? It is stamping a piece of metal made to be used for thousands of transactions. As long as the worth of the metal used to make them is less than their assigned value, I don't see any issue.
