Re: Mile hi
I emailed them to ask this question a few weeks ago. All of the gaskets they use are made of silicone.
So your answer is no, they are not safe. That is the exact reason I will not be giving them any of my business, along with all the other well known retailers I emailed.
As a matter of fact, I can't find a single retailer who sells individual flute sections that uses ptfe and not silicone... Its a serious wtf.

Re: Mile hi
Thanks yall . I wonder why they would use something that is not safe? I am considering buying a tower from them since I am very busy right now. I think the only gasket in there tower packages are in between the tower and the boiler. I suppose I could just use plumbers tape instead of there gasket. I am picking up a 15gallon keg today and am excited to clamp her Her Top!

Re: Mile hi
Because it saves them 20 cents every gasket. They don't give a f@$# about you, your safety or your family's safety. They are fully aware that silicone is unsafe and sell it anyways.Diesel410 wrote:Thanks yall . I wonder why they would use something that is not safe?
It's about the money sunny. This is another reason why we suggest to always build your own still and not buy one. Because we DO care about your family, and a your safety.
Just buy a ptfe tri clamp gasket on amazon for 2$ plus S&H and taxes. Mine came with a certificate of authenticity, and a msds.
Re: Mile hi
Yeah I would like to build my ow. But work is super busy this time of year. I think as long as I do as you say and order a gasket I should be fine till I can build something else.bearriver wrote:Because it saves them 20 cents every gasket. That one should be easy to replace with cork or wood. Do no think that it'd take much to make a safe/simple replacement.
To be honest - I think you could knock out your own DIY column your self with minimal skills in 12 hours or less.
Additionally, you are more easily tracked by the TTB when you purchase both a column and a boiler commercially. I made the mistake of buying a boiler from a distributor. If the FEDs come knocking, the distributor HAS TO COMPLY with the request for a list of ALL CUSTOMERS that purchased boilers, columns and condensers - or any combo thereof.
Take your time, DIY. Make a few mistakes - figure it out - fix 'em, read this board, pay attention to the "elders". You'll do fine, and may even learn a thing or two in the process.

Re: Mile hi
Use dad300's condenser to make a boka, and use an unmodified keg. I would be shocked if it took more than a few hours to build. Plus you would be in it less than $500 for everything.
plus, plus, plus...ect. If your not physically disabled, you should build it. If your not sure how to get it done in time and budget, then ask us for help.

Re: Mile hi
Hot plates suck due to the fact that they cycle to maintain their heat setting. A constant heat source should be used.
Most running on electric use an immersion heater like you'd find in a hot water heater with a controller.

Not a thing wrong with a propane-fired turkey burner. Get with it and make something you can be proud of!

Re: Mile hi
A 2" triclamp gasket will require somebody with a razor knife and steady, strong hands to cut off the part that fits in the non existent groove on the keg. If you fail as badly as I did, flour paste will do fine.

Cheap ptfe gaskets on ebay...any size.
Use sandpaper to smooth keg side.

Re: Mile hi
Hey guys,
I see the 2 inch PTFE triclamp gaskets are pretty available (from Glacier Tanks for example), but what should I use to replace the large silicon gasket between the milk can and the milk can lid? They are currently using Silicone gasket for milk can lids 7 1/4" ID x 8 1/4" OD.
Would I use PTFE for this as well? Will the PTFE form a proper seal in this flat face to face location? Any idea where to get a PTFE gasket this big?
Thanks!
