It's me, Michiel

Post by Michiel »

Hello to all :)

I'm from Holland, where the land is as flat as the beer isn't. I've become a bit of a whisky enthousiast over the last few years (mainly Scotch whisky, but I have a few Bourbons as well) and have amassed quite a bit of theoretical knowledge on the subject of actually making the stuff. But as practice tends to differ from the theory I've been wanting to get a small still for a while to gain an insight into that side of the hobby. So two weeks ago I pulled the trigger and ordered this bad boy:

I've since made one complete run, from mashing through fermentation and double distillation. And I absolutely love it. Already I've discovered so much about how my favourite drink is produced and what influence for instance the heads and tails have on the final taste and smell of the spirit.

So yeah, I guess I'm hooked now :)

Cleaning run: check. Sacrifice run: well, I've drunk some of it, but only sips. The next wash should be ready in a day or two, and that will be the first true run.

I'm indeed using the jars, they work great. I've been reading everything and anything I can find on the subjects of mashing, fermentation, yeast strains, turbos, recipes, distillation, cuts, aging and everything else. This forum (and its Dutch counterpart) as well as the Home Distiller site proper have been extremely helpful.
