SCT 1000 and contactor not good for controlling temperature

Post by biggeroots »

Hello everyone.
I tried using and SCT1000 connected to a 3 phase contactor. The element was 6kw.
The sensor was placed at the top of column in the flow of vapour.
I set it to switch on at 77 and off at 78.
When it reached 78 it switched off the relay, but the heat kept rising to 87 ish.
It then dropped but it kept going down to 74ish even after it switched back on again.
So it seems that this is not the way to control the boiler.
Now i dont know myself, but I guess this wont be any good distilling...what do YOU think?

You shouldn't control still by temperature. You need a power controller instead.

Wrong kind of controller for a still.

Why you need a controller and what kind. (Electric heat)

That could be found in the must read new distiller reading lounge.

Put it in manual and set the output limit to control the heat. Temperature might be interesting but don't control by it.

An sct1000 doesn't have manual. It is a temp controller only. That is full on or full off.

It is in no way the correct controller for the job.

Hi. Yes i knew it was not the way to go but had to prove it to myself. I previously ordered parts to make a proper variable heat controller. Thanks for your opinions :)

The good thing is you have an stc-1000 and they make good controllers for fermenting. Mine runs a heat pad and a fridge at the same time to keep a constant temp, works like a charm

All is not lost the STC1000 can be used to shut down the heater if the pot or condenser temp gets too high.
