Converting to Electric
Did some practice soldering SS to SS. Added a 3/4 ball valve drain. 304 stainless weld spud from amazon http://www.amazon.com/Stainless-Fitting ... =weld+spud" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" rel="nofollow
Harris stay clean, and Harris silver bearing solder kit http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0089E ... UTF8&psc=1" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" rel="nofollow
Waiting for my SCR to arrive and then I will add another spud for the element. I will be updating this thread as parts arrive I know several people are interested in the performance of the digitally controlled SCR I will be using.
Thanks to Bellybuster for his stainless soldering thread and video, thanks to Humbledore for sharing the weld spuds, and thanks to Jimbo for his electric conversion thread. Without these threads I wouldn't have the knowledge to complete this process.

Re: Converting to Electric
Be sure to pressure test your solder joint. It can be tricky to get the keg side to flow properly. Better to find out before it's full of 190 degree wash. [Trust me!]
Distilling at 110f and 75 torr.

I used a 10" crescent wrench to tighten the valve down, torqued it as hard as I could then filled the keg with water and left it sitting overnight with no signs of leaks.

You will be cleaning that keg right?????? a couple of good cleaning runs will tell if you are good and get the flux out that is left.

Re: Converting to Electric
Most definately, I will be doing the cleaning cycle again (vinegar and sacrifical alcohol runs) I am going to go ahead and drill and solder in the element spud tonight and get the cleaning runs done tomorrow with propane. That way I don't have to do the cleaning runs again later when my controller parts arrive. I have a wheated burbon clearing out to be stripped so I can't be completly out of commission until the SCR comes.

Re: Converting to Electric
Alright got all my parts in and everything put together. The digitally controlled SCR is pretty sweet. It has buttons and a display instead of a pot with a knob. The display reads goes from 0-100 so it has very fine adjustments. I've got lots of pics I will post up tomorrow. I am stoked to get some insulation on my boiler and do a run to see how she really performs. Pics to follow on Monday

Looking forward to the pics. I just posted on a previous thread about the Chinese writing. I suppose you have already solved that mystery.

0-100 of what? .....percentage of input voltage? Let us know.White_Lightning_Rod wrote:.... The display reads goes from 0-100 so it has very fine adjustments. ....

Yes it is 0-100 percent I am assuming, but Im going to borrow a fluke from a friend of mine to verify that.Soggy Bottom Boy wrote:0-100 of what? .....percentage of input voltage? Let us know.White_Lightning_Rod wrote:.... The display reads goes from 0-100 so it has very fine adjustments. ....
Yes the chinese writing did throw me off as well, but I used google translate and figured it out, also I emailed the seller and verified as well.

Re: Converting to Electric
Nice! I was looking for a stainless steel box as well but had to settle on 4 boxes that are 4*4 junction boxes. BTW, nice touch with the rattle can on the cup. I like it!
I am going to try a few things a little different. I am using 6 foot dryer cords and then the matching plugs for quick assembly and disassembly. Also, since I plan on running two 5500 elements at one time, I am putting in a third outlet that is not regulated. That way I can plug one in unregulated and not tax the device during warm up. I figure since I am using 11000 watts at full potential that it could melt down my high end, made in Hong Kong device. Thanks again for the picks and the eBay links, I have been able to draft through this build on the heels of everyone else's hard work.

Re: Converting to Electric
Im going to see how long my heat up times are and I may add another element later that would be plugged straight in, just to speed heatup, just depends on how long heatup takes. I am also going to order a nice plastic project box to rebuild my controller in. This was an old disconnect box that had melted down, I stripped it out and cleaned it up then hit it with the krylon as well. The box works, just not as pretty as I wanted but my budget got depeted before I got to the new plastic box.

Re: Converting to Electric
Thought I would post and share the new build. Im upgrading from a 2.5 gal boiler to a 6. Camco 1500 straight element in a 24 qt bayou classic pot. Hole punched the pot and mounted the element with a 1 inch nos SS locknut and some ss shims. And a ptfe oring. And yes that a modded HF controller. Thanks to all the "masters" and other like minded folks out here in HD world. Going on 3 years now and it's still (pun intended) fun as well as learning
