sugar maple charcoal and oak question
I was told sugar maple charcoal makes an excellent filter for likker. Anybody heard of doing this or know where to get it? Also had a question about aging my ujssm. I put my first batch on mild char oak chips at 120p. How long generally should I let it oak?

Let it oak for as long as you think it needs. Try to hit at least 4-6 months

Problem is ya gotta taste to know what it needs then ya go, "Hmmm. That was pretty darned good. I can live with that." and it was only like two months.Tokoroa_Shiner wrote:Let it oak for as long as you think it needs. Try to hit at least 4-6 months

Yes that is true. It's not often you're wrong, but this time your right.
Make sure to write dates on you aging jars/bottles. So you have a better chance of replicating your results.

Jack Danieles uses that charcoal method. I have tried it one time it gives the whisky a smokey flavor. I couldn't find sugar maple when I did it so I bought a maple plank from the grocery store that is used to cook on the bbq with
