ordered a new still from appalachian metal works.

Post by jess1982 »

well got one offa ebay, haven't distilled anything since high school. that was some years ago. in chemistry. vodka, tasted like shit. yeasty, but the funny thing is me and my chemistry teacher got along pretty good and he had a sample cabinet from 1960, and shared some of what they made back then. when he retired. a great guy. and that was actually pretty good stuff. don't know what i'll get from appalachian metal works, but i am gettin older and i need a hobby. my favorite drink is slivovitch. a yugo plumb brandy, made from plums and apples, but is about 160 proof. when i was in chemistry we ran the vodka about 10 times through, so any help on making moonshine would help, after it gets put in the cooker or kettle can you run it back through? time after time? to make it stronger? and what the hell is a thumper? looks like a holding tank that evaporates before the condenser. or pushes the pre liquid to the condenser. all we had back then was a flask that was sealed to the condenser tube, that was supplied with water, flask was heated, vapors went through the condenser and dripped out to a flask. when the flask filled up we put it back to the heated flask. time and time again, but it still tasted like shit. any help greatly appreciatted. jess.

Welcome to the hobby. After reading your post. It is quite obvious that you don't really know much about home distillation. I suggest you do allot more reading here before you even take your still out if the box.

Sounds like you've got a bit of learnin to do before your still arrives, Jess. It's not as difficult as you're thinking.

Welcome friend you really should have come here and read a while before you bought that still.Don't know if they are a registered still builder if they are they put a serial number on them. And a record of who it is sold to is kept.Any time the government boys ask for those records they have to hand them over! I hope by now they know we don't make enough ethanol to mess with. And the vast majority of home distillers don't sell.Hell I stash it from my friends.Be safe have fun.

just to clarify.. by the regs, still builders do not have to keep a list until asked to do so. The request is not retroactive.

27 CFR PART 29, SUBPART C - STILLS

"When required by letter issued by the appropriate TTB officer and until notified to the contrary by the appropriate TTB officer, every person who manufactures any still, boiler (double or pot still), condenser, or other apparatus to be used for the purpose of distilling shall give written notice before the still or distilling apparatus is removed from the place of manufacture."

I humbly stand corrected I apologize, don't mean to instil fear just don't want to see anyone get in trouble for something that should not be illegal to begin with.

Welcome!!!
Parent Site, Parent Site, Parent Site.
Also, (if I'm not mistaken) that comes with a glass jar thumper ..A definite 'No-No'..
Other than that, they're nice ..You can always add a copper or small barrel thumper.
Learn/start with a simple Tried and True recipe to start ..
You'll be OK ..Be patient ..
