1st try of wheated bill

Many like to post about a first successful ferment (or first all grain mash), or first still built/bought or first good run of the still. Tell us about all of these great times here.
Pics are VERY welcome, we drool over pretty copper 8)

1st try of wheated bill

Post by nickbbb »

Just pitched my first try of the 1/2 barrel wheated bourbon. BUT I scaled it down to 6 gallons. Had quite a time trying to cool it down to be able to add yeast but I managed to get it done. We shall see how it goes!!

Well it has stalled. It's close but not quite there. My Sweetfeed stalled also. Kinda strange they both stalled at the same time. But I'm going to try to run it in a few days to see.

Do you have a hydrometer? What was your OG and FG? What temp was the fermentation?

That seems reasonable, no? Were you expecting a lower FG? For my whiskey mashes (50% 2-row 50% wheat) I've only had a couple go below 1.010.

I am just waiting for the same FG 3 days in a row. It started out great and then on day 2 it stopped, so I aerated it and seems to have done the trick.

Well I forgot to update this. Needless to say this was my first run that didn't go smoothly. I got distracted from the first jar (I know I know). But this run got too hot too quick and the first jar came out looking like lemonade. Once my oh $hit moment passed I calmed down and lowered the temp. then it turned clear. The product actually tasted decent but was low %. Will most likely try this one again. but try not to make stupid rookie mistakes!
