Hello,
After making several batches/ runs of panela rum with baker's yeast (Instaferm brand) i would like to do some experimenting with other types of yeasts. A lot of folks seem to be using baker's yeast for rum but in this post <homedistiller.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=7678> i read that other yeasts gave better results.
"So why don't you go ahead then?", you could ask. I live on an island where ordering from the internet is not yet fully developed and thus iffy. I must ask someone to order this in Holland and then take the yeast along when they come visit the island. The 'London ESB beer yeast' came out as one of the best yeasts for making rum in the test i mentioned. Wile this yeast is available to be ordered in Holland, it is a liquid yeast and i don't know if it would survive the ordering/ travelling unscathed.
So i went on looking for dry yeast and found this one:
<www.erbsloeh.com/product_datasheets/en/ ... GB_001.pdf>
But the product description say that it should be used up within 3 days of opening the package.
So buying a large pack would not be a good idea.
So my point is, because i cannot just order yeast whenever i want, i need to get myself a stash. Should i order several packs of dry yeast? Or will a single large pack do?
Thanks!
Edit:
Some more info. The yeast will be ordered in Holland, then sit there a couple of weeks before its 9 hour flight to where I am.

Re: Acquiring yeast for rum
Okay so i have been sniffing around the forum. And most people who buy larger packets of yeast just reseal the packet after use and refrigerate. I guess i will do that. I was just confused by the product description that said to use up within 3 days of opening. I guess they are just anal and/or want to sell a lot of yeast?
