Whisky

Post by East Coast »

Is there a way to make shine into a whisky, look and flavor?
Is there an easy and best way to do it?

Thanks

I think we have a definition issue here. My UJSSM is a home made corn "whiskey" which makes it a 'shine as is any home distilled spirit.

Otherwise, I'm not sure what you are asking. :eh:

Well first you make whiskey instead of shine. But then again there are don many different definitions of shine. It's hard to say.

And what is whiskey look and flavor? Or your definition? There is white whiskey, Wood aged whiskey, bourbon whiskey, scotch whiskey, Irish whiskey, corn whiskey, malt whiskey, and some others. Each of which would take its own method.

Distill a grain based white dog or shine. Age on toasted to charred white oak and you will have the color and much of the flavor profile of whisky/whiskey. Per Mr. PIss's post, which style whisky/whiskey are you hoping to perfect?
I just noticed your post is title "Whisky", the Scotch whisky spelling. If you are looking for whisky. Distill a mash of malted barley ( peated or not), LME OR DME and age in a a used oak barrel or on used staves or chips

That was a typo I forgot to put the the E in whiskey, I was looking to get a jack daniels whiskey or a crown royal whiskey look and flavor.

Maybe something like this:

would using something like this work?

How much to use and how long would you have to let it sit?

JD and crown royal are two different types.

But there are many good threads about oak aging whiskey.

Start out making a whiskey mash. Or faux whiskey wash. Distill it and oak age it.

Do some reading! There are a ton of threads and just as many opinions out there! Experiment, see what works best for you. What I always went with was "better off safe than sorry" mentality when it comes to oaking. You can always add more.....
Well, between Scotch and nothin', I suppose I'd take Scotch. It's the nearest thing to good moonshine I can find.

looks like lots. if you want more color char them with a torch first. if you want more flavour toast them in an oven (in foil) at 380Ffor 2- 2.5 hrs.

jd chips take at least 3 weeks to start to taste decent (imo) for the first while some harshness that mellows at week 3.

the only problem i've run into with this is that it starts to taste like JD after a while... other wood is soooo much better.
I finally quit drinking for good.

now i drink for evil.

That looks like more than a fair share of chips in that jar. You need to be tasting that every week and get them out as soon as you have enough flavor.

As for reusing them, how many times do you make coffee with the same beans? I suggest you dry them out a bit and smoke bacon with them.

I put 3 litres into a jar and add all the chips,(I havn't used those particular chips tho) leave it for two days and drain off. Next I add 3 litres again to all the chips and leave it for a week, when that's done, I add the two batches together and put it all thru coffee filters to clean the dust, chips and charcoal off it, jam it into a bottle or two, slide some into a glass and swallow!
