Red Rims Smokey Whiskey

Post by Red Rim »

It is about time I shared my method for flavoring my whiskey.

I started with a plan and it went south, however, the end result turned into a much better flavor.

First I took my chainsaw, dumped out the bar oil and replaced it with vegetable oil.
Then I took large pieces of oak and bastard cut them (length wise with the grain), this gives you large curly pieces of shavings.
My thought being, the larger the surface area the greater the transmission of flavor.
Next, I put them in a smaller pressure cooker(finally have a use for that damn thing), and lit it on fire. The flames will jump up right away. As soon as you know you have enough heat to keep it going, put the lid on and choke the flame out. Let it smolder for a few minutes and then pull the lid back off again. The fire will take off again. Let it burn for a minute and then choke it back out again. Wait a few minutes, open it back up and add more shavings. Keep repeating this process. You will end up with a mixture of 1) new smokey shavings. 2) charred shavings and 3) charcoal.

Now take the entire mix and put it into a two gallon glass container. Pour your corn likker over the smoked shavings and let it sit.
In about two weeks the flavor will permeate your likker.
I then ladle it through a coffee filter to pull any bits and pieces out.
The finish product is smooth and smokey. The bits of charcoal absorb any of the off flavors and smooth the taste out quickly.

I welcome any criticism on this method. The only drawback is I don't taste much vanilla like in regular whiskey, but this is a flavor all its own.
There is no such thing as a stupid question....... Unless you didn't research it first.

Cool, I like it.

You are right about the surface area mate.

Criticisim, hey look, I will take a stab at what will most probably you will be faced with......

1) How do you know you got all of the bar oil out, etc, etc.

2) Did the pressure cooker have a rubber seal, that is a no no (please excuse my tounge in cheek there ) :)

3) Has anyone ever found a data sheet on coffee filters, you know they go through a bleaching process and so on and so forth, it is not one of the allowed materials on this site.

4) Were you using a food grade fire? If it is no good for consumption then why put it in your drink?

Ok, ok, sorry for the sarcasam, as I said, I liked the idea mate :)

Awesome! That is hilarious!
I did actually burn up the rubber seal on one pass of the pressure cooker, I laugh every time I think about it. Now I know both the taste and smell of burnt seal!
I did my research and found HD forum approved food grade fire. :D
