what's your excuse?
When your standing in line at Walmart with 15lb of sugar, 2lbs yeast, and 3 boxes of corn flakes? How about at the hardware store buying all kinds of copper that are in no way plumbing related?
Just curious to see what some of you creative minds have come up with!

Re: what's your excuse?
excuse? Na, you don't need one untill you are buying 50 lb sacks of sugar. You like cake and bread no big deal. 50 lb bag now the church is havn a bake sale. You want to buy a cake or make a donation? Can we count on you? A little paranoia is healthy.
Damn water heater and brother in law who thinks he is a plumber. Can you believe it? Can I bring this back if I don't need it? Know what you want when you go in. This is what brother in law said I needed. Not everyone is gonna be looking at you just the people on here. hahahahha

I get more nervous buying grains at the feed store. I like to avoid tsc and go to a local independent place. That guy who carries it out for you knows whats up. He doesn't talk about it, but I can tell he knows..
I can walk out of costco with 2 50lb sacks of sugar an no one bats an eye.

Re: what's your excuse?
I guess maybe people here are just too friendly. I was asked once when buying liebig supplies what it was for, just gave the deer in headlights look and said....just a project I'm doing.
Then again when in a feed store asking for non pellet sweet feed for "a friend that lives out if town". The lady looked at me and said " you mean the kind you mash?" Again deer in headlights!Lol I just said I dunno they just asked me to check for them!

One hardware store I shop at looks like they cater to still builders. I go in there and have to weave through a bunch of ole boys standing around BSing - like an indoor liar's bench. Since most of the items I buy are also used in the beer and wine making processes, that's the story I give if questioned. I just hope that none of them are into that hobby because any close scrutiny by any of them would surely blow my cover.

So, true... a few weeks ago I walked through the baking goods aisle and the entire sugar section was empty. Everything else was all stocked and tidy, but just bare shelving where the sugar used to be. Had to grin, as I wheeled my 80 pounds of potatoes toward the checkouthalfbaked wrote:Not everyone is gonna be looking at you just the people on here. hahahahha

For the most part for sugar grains and stuff like that i just say im a novice prepper. As for the copper stuff i usually get it at work or if i gotta buy it i just say i am building a fancy artsy fountain for some snobby rich guys trophy wife.

When in my local brew store last they have over 300 John smith rewards points customers all pay with cash. Here in Mo we aren't quite so paranoid but still guarded.

I get more looks when I'm carrying a couple cases of jars... Sugar and grains no problem. Same with copper. Except when I'm looking for 2"+ then it's down to "restoration purposes in an old house"

When I'm buying bits at the hardware store and the cashier asks me what I'm using it for, I say I'm an artist. Then I look at her like I just discovered the meaning of life. That's when I tell her she must come to my shed, I mean studio so that I can paint her nude.

I'm not sure what the women that work at your hardware store look like.....but I'd be terrified if some of the ones I know said yes to that proposal! Re: what's your excuse?
I have got to remember some of these if I ever get asked . Living in an AG town it is not uncommon to buy several bags of grain no questions asked. If they did ask , just tell them you are fattening up some beef or hogs. I get sugar when I need it at the bulk store where all the restaurants and bakeries buy their goods , everything is big there so again no questions.

Re: what's your excuse?
Just thinking on this. I am guessing no one thinks of a lady making whiskey. If I buy a bunch of mason jars it is probably for canning . If a guy buys a bunch of mason jars he must be doing something different. If I buy a bunch of sugar I must be baking . If I buy grain it must be for horses or live stock. You guys should have your wives or girlfriends get your stuff for you and you just push the cart.

Works for me at the grocery store and feed store . If I send SOH to the local plumbing supply they ask her two questions :'What do you need today ? Didja bring any samples ?'corene1 wrote:Just thinking on this. I am guessing no one thinks of a lady making whiskey. If I buy a bunch of mason jars it is probably for canning . When inquiring about 2"+ copper at a plumbing supply I was asked if I was building a still. I simply said no, a rectifier. The clerk looked strangely at me and "I know nothing about electrical". I had to laugh.

I've been asked, about sugar at Sam's Club, twice. First time, I was buying yeast, as well. I told them the wife bakes cakes, bread, etc. The second time was sugar, alone. I told them about once every two months, we have a group buy, at work. Cheaper than the regular grocery store, and I'm the only one with a Sam's Club card.

Re: what's your excuse?
When C&H sugar goes on sale at Safeway I always buy 6- 10pound bags which I store in waterproof storage bins, One day the checkout lady asked if we were doing some baking. My quick response was "No I'm fireing up the still" which got a good laugh. And my wife told her it was for holiday baking. Usually I go into a rant about beet sugar and wanting to put back as much GMO free cane sugar as possible before Monsanto manages to get to that. Same goes for canning jars, garden, green beans, tomatoes are all GMO free and safer if home canned.
For copper and hardware, I tell them it is for a steampunk project or fountain. One day I had the boka head I was working on at work and had 2 different people ask me about it, I told one it was for a water clock for my garden and the other it was part of a steam whistle. Most people who know me have learned not to ask about my projects.

Re: what's your excuse?
Sam's for sugar and baker's yeast...never really questioned. Bought 50 lbs of flaked steamed oats and that got there attention...I joked porridge for the kids, two meals a day! Clerk looked horrified. I was suddenly afraid she would call protective services. I don't have kids at home.
Bulk bags of rice..."You don't look Asian?" "Wife is...feeds me this crap three times a day." My tall redhead not Asian wife standing by me..."Ah, this is my girlfriend." Again clerk looked horrified.
Local store had some demura sugar that got wet...I bought two cases off the sale rack and asked if they had any more. Clerk says really? What you doing with these bricks? I told her I would use it for deer bait.
I buy all the damaged outdated cereal I can find also...tell them it's for baking or critter feed.
I bought five kegs off the same guy once over the phone. Told him I was setting up to brew beer. They were at his girlfriend's house so she set the pickup and told me he owed her $100usd...all she wanted was $100. Told me he was a local cop while I was there. Then says, "If you're making a still I expect a quart later!" I threw the kegs in the truck and never looked back.
