Tried to make fruit infused 'shine, results curious.

Post by baron4406 »

Recently had a birthday, as usual my step sons went all out for me. Got some great cigars, tools and a jar of Junior Johnson's Blueberry moonshine. Now I'm a snob when it comes to commercial stuff, but it WAS a gift. Me and the wife sipped it one night and it was darn good. So I have some high octane stuff laying around that never made it to aging. measured it and i was around 70% ABV with a little heads bite. Decided I'd try to make my own fruit hootch. Took two jars, filed one with ripe raspberries and the other blackberries, then poured in the hootch. About 3 weeks later the color was great so I strained them and measured the ABV. Got the shock of my life, most of the alcohol was gone!! They measured 30% and 35%. WTF happened? I used Mason jars, and I keep my hootch in them and don't lose any ABV. Did the fruit do anything?

And if I'm right the sugars from the fruit will make the reading wrong.

+1 No worries Baron. Your ethanol is still in there.
In theory there's no difference between theory and practice. But in practice there is.
