I feel like a beginner

Post by jus teasin »

I finaly was able to keep my friends out of the licker long enough to save enough for a spirit run. I was excited. The run went great came out perfectly clear.
Then the trouble started.
I blended everyting down to 80 proof with the same well water I always use it averaged 132 but went cloudy not bad just a bit. Ok probably some tails but still tastes great and smooth. So I added some oak to 1 gallon carboys 11" X 3/4" X 3/8" I did this on the 28th of Aug. I looked at it yesterday and to my surprise it turned green.
any suggestions?

Thanks JT

Green? You sure it was oak? Did you leave the bark on? Was it pressure treated?
Distilling at 110f and 75 torr.

It came from the lumber store. they said it was red oak.
I slightly charred it. only the corners and the high grain it was still white between the grain
no bark no treat.
it is still very smooth and the cloudiness is gone. just green not much oak flavor yet

Thanks for replying JT

Was it kiln dried? That would make a difference to.
You know your an alcoholic when you have your own still, mash your own grain and distill your own likker, but you don't care!!! A.A. is for quitters.

From what I know, red oak has a lot of toxic tannins. I know a lot of people that smoke meats and don't use it for this reason. Never seen any reports, so it could be false info, but always worth checking. The tannins in red oak do smell like cat piss, I know that much.

You don't want kiln dried lumber from the lumber store from what I have been told. And yes I have read that red oak has a lot of poisonous tannins that is why white oak is used. I would do some serious checking before drinking this. Hope this helps!
