Brown Muddy UJSM

Post by JH1 »

A 1st gen. batch of ujsm nicely made.
Aging on oak & cinnamon sticks.

Filtered a pint out early to try today, & tastes great (a little on the sweet side, but still mellow enough).
Used a coffee filter (IF anyone knows a better/faster method, that would be much appreciated!)

Diluted from 64% abv down to 40% abv.
Still tastes good, but very weak imo.

Placed the remainder in the freezer with a closed tight mason jar.
Check back to taste it cold after 5-6 hours, and it is hazel brown & looks like a coffee/muddy-type substance.
Still liquid, no ice but major change in color.

Color was previously a dark gold red, and looked delicious. Now it looks like shit, and I'm not even gonna try it haha.
So, does anyone know what happened here?

Took it out for it to warm back up and see if it comes back to normal color.

I would guess it is the cinnamon coming out of suspension. Filter it again.

Hmm... seemed to turn back to almost regular color after thawing out back to room temp.
Slightly cloudy now instead of clear though.

Maybe cut it too much? Down around 30% will get thick and cloudy when in the freezer.
No, officer, I wasn't distilling alcohol! It was probably that guy!

Important information for new distillers

From my experience cinnamon will clog your coffee filters after awhile and fall outta suspension in jars or bottles. Its screwed me with allot of ciders and wines with its sediment. Still completely drinkable tho, just looks like shit. I stopped using it cause people were wondering wtf was floating around in my drinks lol.

Yes, that's true. Coffee filters are extremely slow at filtering this stuff, slower than getting some drop.
Maybe I'll try to find an ingredient that doesn't use real cinnamon.

Try a paper towel instead of the coffee filter.
Everything's better home made, everything!!
