How many ounce's or gram's of Oak per gallons

Post by CanadianBacon »

I see pictures of people with giants sticks of oak in there gallon jugs. . I currently have some sour mash sitting on 1 ounce of medium chared oak, It tastes smokey, But no woody or vanilla flavors. I ended up throwing in one whole clove today hoping it would add abit more into the aging over the next month or so. Might add vanilla bean if this oak dosen't put out any flavor.

I feel like I used to little, should I pick up 2 more ounces and toss em in? I like my taste to be close to the amount of oak in double black label. I have no idea how much at all to use.

What are the dimensions off the stick. Never seen oak measured by weight...

Just a bag of oak cubes like you would buy at the HB store, about 1/2 inch by 1/2 inch. about 20-30 cubes. I rinsed off before throwing in because they had a heavy char aswell and lots of residue.

I use 10 to 20 grams of JD chips or little wine shop cubes per liter, charred or not. Surface area is probably better on sticks.

A good surface area number is 15 sq"/quart. In a gallon, I use 6 sticks of toasted oak that is ~3/4"x3/4"x5".
