Has anyone tried to charcoal filter rum ? Sorta like the jack Daniels way ?
I have been thinking about it a lot lately and I have this big old apple log that I'm gonna cut up for the heart wood and I was thinking maybe I can make charcoal from the rest and filter some rum threw it ...
Does anyone have any experience using apple wood or trying to charcoal filter rum ?
I'm gonna make the charcoal anyways for the BBQ but I wanna try putting run threw it and age on apple wood to
Does anyone have any suggestions on what char to put on the wood ? Maybe apple wood is better with no char

You would probably kill some flavour.
There is a difference between activated carbon and some wood you want to burn.
Not sure why you want to do this..did your last run turn out that bad you thought about activated carbon?

Silver rum is aged then filtered just enough to remove the color. If you like silver rum, try it.

Don't forget to post your venture here. Being a niche, I havent seen one member doing this and would very much like to.

It is something that I have been researching also.
If you are trying to create a Silver rum, which is usually aged in used barrels for 1 year or 2, then the removal of the color and some of the pot still funk is achieved through carbon filtering.

You would get the lovely esters and the refined likker of barrel aged booze but with no color.

I really dont care about the color unless I am doing a dark rum. I like the flavors that come over with a double distilled Hook Rum. Adding some oak attributes would be a different product. It is worth trying.

Since it is all about experimenting with flavors and colors I say go for it and document it like bearriver mentioned.

I have also been reading the threads about sugar maple charcoal... there are so many possibilities!!
