Maltodextrin

Post by greggn »

I'd like to add some mouthfeel to a batch of neutral but would prefer to avoid the sweetness from glycerin. Can maltodextrin be added to spirits post-distillation ? If so, is it added directly in powder form or should it first be dissolved in some distilled water and then added to the spirits ?

Can't help you with a answer, but I'm curious how the experiment with maltodextrin works out.

I'll give it a try this weekend unless I get advice in strong opposition. I'll post my findings then.

So, it's been quite some time since I started this experiment, and I tried some different things, but it just hasn't gone well.

While maltodextrin is indeed flavorless I didn't think it added any significant mouthfeel ... at least not enough to out weigh the indigestion that it creates. As an alternative I also tried glycerin, which indeed adds body and mouthfeel, but is just too sweet.

Ultimately, I realized it's just not worth screwing around with a product that it otherwise fine.
