Giant Wild Juniper Berries and Gin

Hey All,
I am visiting my brother in Arizona, and on a hike near Sedona AZ, I found trees with gigantic (maybe 1 inch in diameter) juniper berries growing on trees. I have no idea the species of the plant they were, but they looked and smelled like juniper. I was curious if anybody knows anything about them, and whether or not gin could be made of them. I assume they are not poisonous, we saw a bunch of scat with berry remains in it, indicating that some sort of animals have been eating them, although it would still be good to know the species and whatnot. Also, what modifications would I need to do to a normal gin recipe to accommodate them?

Do the trees have bark that looks like alligator skin?

Also just because animals eat them does not mean their not poisonous to humans! Make sure to have a positive ID!

Post your photos. If you didn't take any, take the samples you took to a local expert. If you didn't take any samples, go back and get some.
