Re: Lemon grass
We use it in gin and other maceration...keep it in a pot on the porch.

Re: Lemon grass
I got a gift from a Polish guy, it was high end Polish vodka and it had a long sprig of lemon grass in it. Good stuff.

Re: Lemon grass
I've never had alcohol with a lemon grass flavor. I enjoy Vietnamese and Thai foods flavored with lemon grass though. I have to try this. Sounds good.

Re: Lemon grass
I just put about a tsp into a coffee filter and put it in about 250ml of 45% neutrals. Turns out real nice and smooth with a nice little lemon taste. I'd definitely try it. I also tried it in some corn whiskey and got some pretty good results too, but neutrals is prefered. I just get a bag of it from a local brewshop.

Re: Lemon grass
I don't have a reflux still to do true neutrals, yet. I will be putting it into a triple potstilled w/ thumper corn likker I made a few years ago, that I still have a couple gallons of clear. It's a really super light tasting sipping likker. Not really to my taste (too light and not much flavor), but its the closest I have to a neutral. I have a friend that owns a Vietnamese restaurant and want to try to get some fresh Lemon Grass to macerate in the likker. I might also try it on a SF recipe that I have sitting around. Was thinking about using some brandy, but I don't think it will mesh with the fruit too well. I may try anyway, just for S&G's.thisguy wrote:I just put about a tsp into a coffee filter and put it in about 250ml of 45% neutrals. Turns out real nice and smooth with a nice little lemon taste. I live 2.5 hours from the closest brewshop, but I might pick up some next time I go to town.
Thanks for the idea.

Re: Lemon grass
Otherwise just order some off Amazon next time you order something. When I did it with the corn likker I make I tuned out good. The sweet taste of the corn mixes well with the lemon flavor. I think It'd also go good with SF too. Half the fun of this hobby is experimenting anyways

Re: Lemon grass
I can find it at an asian grocery, and have rooted it in a glass of water.

Re: Lemon grass
I've made a clove/lemongrass infused vodka before. Also had lemongrass infused Lao Lao when I was in Laos a couple years back. Good for infusions, although it can be a bit perfumy imho. I prefer a lemon zest.
Easiest way to avoid being on a TTB list is to not purchase a boiler, full column, or condensor from a retailer. Build your own.

Re: Lemon grass
A lemon grass infusion with corn likker is something I am going to have to try in the near future. I just sounds too interesting. I've made old fashioned hillbilly Lemon Drop for friends for years. I usually make it around Nov-Dec and let it sit in the dark until July, when I give it to my friends. I just like trying to make something that I haven't done before. A lot of times the original recipe gets "hillbillyfied" because I don't have access to a certain ingredient or I'll use corn likker instead of neutral. But that is what makes this hobby so fun for me.
Anyway, thanks for the idea, now I have to set it into motion.

Humbledore,
Could it be that your Polish vodka was actually zubrowka, a vodka flavored with bison grass rather than lemongrass?
It is a fine drink.

Re: Lemon grass
Just come across this thread.
I make a lemongrass vodka.
Just put it in a Carter Head and it comes out clear as water.
Beautiful flavour - very delicate.
Most of the women love the taste.
To me it tastes like lemonade ice blocks from my childhood..
