Walmart 5 gallon HDPE buckets
Not saying you can't use these to do a ferment, but if you expect to get a lid seal good enough for an air lock, good luck. I have 4 five gallon washes going. Two are in Tractor Supply 5 gallon HDPE buckets and the other two are in Walmart buckets. I have 3/4" rubber stoppers in the lids of all four with 3/8" clear hose running to a water filled jug for air locks. The two TSC buckets are bubbling away and the two Walmart buckets are not. I popped the lids on the two Walmart buckets and they are actively fermenting. I even followed some advice I got here on the forums to use honey in the seal groove on the lids - didn't help. The Walmart buckets will be relegated to grain storage.

Re: Walmart 5 gallon HDPE buckets
Frodo, I saw those gamma lids at Lowe's a while back and had hoped to buy a couple, but when I tried to put one onto one of their buckets, it didn't seem to fit the bucket. I was thinking that if I ever did get it to seal, I wouldn't be able to pry it off again. I noticed they also had a non-screw-on version of it - like a regular lid, but with a rubber seal in the groove. Same problem with it - just wouldn't go on the bucket. Anybody else tried the gamma lids?

Thanks for that link dieselduo. Great price for the 6 gallon bucket and it comes with the lid - much cheaper than the brew shop.

Re: Walmart 5 gallon HDPE buckets
The gamma lids are great. I use them for grain storage. They are very structural so I feel comfortable stacking buckets on top of each other. They are a bitch to get on, I have to whack them with a big mallet. Once on, they are not coming off. Honestly though I can't tell much difference between that and a normal lid for freshness of grain, if there is such a thing.

the seal is really good..i use a 2x4 and a hammer to lock the outter ring on the bucket
place on the bucket, hammer the shit out of it!!!
use a 2x4 so you dont crack it. it unscrews, so i have never tried to take it off
i store grain, food, cat food, bird food, think i will use it for ferminting

Re: Walmart 5 gallon HDPE buckets
I've had them for years. The buckets are sturdy and they are still air tight. I used a rubber mallet to get the rings over the buckets

Re: Walmart 5 gallon HDPE buckets
Well, I may go ahead and get a couple from Lowe's just to try them on my existing buckets. I like those 6 gallon buckets at the beprepared.com site. Even with the shipping, they're about the same price as the ones at the home brew store that only have standard lids.
Thanks all for posting up the good info.

The only difference may be that the homebrew shops usually have a hole drilled and grommet inserted...
