Flaked maize in ireland

Post by Thehoff69 »

Hi guys,

Started my first batch of UJSSM using flaked maize. Cracked corn is hard to find in Ireland.
After speaking with a friend who keeps horses, I was told that you could throw milk over flaked maize made for horses and eat as corn flakes!! Seemed safe to me!

So I brought a 25KG bag and started a wash.

Does anyone else use flaked maize or have any info on how it compairs to cracked corn in the end product?

Thanks for reading

I've used flaked maize before, easy to work with in some ways & tough in others.
Being flaked it has already been gelled up, so you don't need the long cook at higher temps to make it gel, on the flip side squeezing it out to recover the liquid is tougher (& probably more messy) than with cracked corn.

Using flaked also gave me a better SG than I've gotten with cracked corn, I've only used it once though since it costs me a lot more than cracked.

Thanks guys,

Prices here in the UK are flipped compared to US. I got 25kg flaked Maize for £6, cracked corn( which I wasn't sure was the right version) £40 for 20kg.,
You can see why the flaked maize was attractive .

Looking through the side of my fermenter I can see that the flaked maize has taken up more than half of my 10lt wash.so It looks like I will only get 5 or 6lts to strip run
It is only my first wash of UJSSM so I guess I'll not add as much maize the volume of wash will correct itself on further generations?

Thanks again
