Raw white oak

Post by Spankey »

I am looking for a wood source to make my own white oak aging sticks.I will toast it in my oven and use my torch to char it. So my question is where do i find american white oak suitable to making my own whiskey sticks.

A place like this... https://www.owlhardwood.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" rel="nofollow

Note you want quartersawn. It costs more because it shows a beautiful ray fleck for furniture, but Im pretty sure I read somewhere that was the preferred cut for barrel staves. Something about how the grain orientation seals up or some shit, or maybe I just made that all up? Its a fuzzy memory.

Edit, for sticks it probably doesnt make a hill of beans difference on the quartersawn thing

In theory there's no difference between theory and practice. But in practice there is.

Dang I did look but not for already toasted or charred wood. Bit that's a damn good price specially if I get the just toasted ones and char them my self. Thanks for the help

any good hardwood supplier for cabinet shops...or the cabinet shops themselves will have some white oak...A three dollar piece will last you for a year.I get it for 5$ a board foot and have oaked many batches with that three dollar piece.

Look for air dried rather than kiln dried wood from a cabinet supplier . Some kiln dried products are chemicly treated .

A few pieces of firewood will work as long as you know for sure that it's white oak. You should also trim an inch, or so, off of each end because it will probably have some oil from the chain saw.

You can also order white oak lumber online. I got a piece a while back from Rockler.com that was on sale for $5. It was 3/4" X 3" X 24". Problem was shipping - more than the sale price of the wood.

Whatever route you take, don't count on it being properly seasoned. Most lumber is kiln dried and that doesn't really cut it for our purposes. I sort of force-seasoned mine. Cut it into sticks (3/4 X 3/4 X 5 inches), put it in a jar, fill with water, put a lid on it, and leave it for a couple of weeks. After soaking, lay it outside to dry for a couple of weeks. Do three cycles of this and it's ready to toast/char. You basically want to soak it enough times that the water comes out clear.

Look at your woodworking supply place. Many have white oak in stock.

Quarter sawn is not really needed especially when you are looking at doign 3/4x3/4x5"

This shows how the different sawing techniques are used to saw a log. Notice how carefully selected plain sawn pieces can be just as good as quarter sawn

i went to my local saw mill. asked him if he had any white oak that had been sitting around for the last year or so. right there he cuts off about a foot off a long right in front of us. asked if i needed any more. foolishly i said no . i told him right off the bat it was going to be used to age alcohol. wines and beers. just so he knew that what i was asking for was going to be consumed . cost me nothing other driving down to the mill and shooting the shit with the guy. old school operation for sure. next time i i go back to get more oak ill probably bring him a small bottle.

i didnt really mean a "small bottle" . enough to thank him. i also gotta feel him out a little. what if he doesnt drink whiskey ? imagine that lol.

. the old man who runs it/ owner showed me around the whole place. showed me the kilns and saws and huge out building . a little how the kilns worked and they way they used them. one of those old school guys that enjoys to show his opperation to younger guys like myself. i probably could have spent the day there and he would have been happy to have me tag around. very good people. only about 10 minutes from me so i know ill be stopping by again in the near future

WV State Fair one year when we took our draft horses down there they had a sawmill set up and running off a steam tractor . I offered to help out and was welcomed into the fold . Mr. Roy ,the sawyer , and his brother Cree , the off bearer , were staunch Bapists and wouldn't drink in front of each other . Mr.Howard , what owned that 8x10 Eclipse steam tractor was a different deal . He liked his drop several times a day . Now I was being the nigger on the mill and trying to keep Mr.Howard lubricated at the same time because he was trying to show me around a steam engine . That all worked pretty good until about two hours after dinner time . Mr.Roy would have that mill just a singing and we was all hustling to keep him cleared and then Mr.Howard would start feeling the effects of the drops I'd been bringing him all day . Just as Mr.Roy would pull the crowd and start a pass on a log Mr.Howard would start tooting the steam whistle on his engine . Steam pressure would drop , Mr.Roy's saw would start running snakey from the loss of power . Wasn't probably more that three or four people in the crowd that knew what had had happened . That was enough to redass Mr. Roy and that was enough to satisfy Mr. Howard .

sounds like your drunk and not making much sense. I've actually been contributing for about 8 months. You've been a member for a whole 1 day longer than I have. Can you point out where i trashed everything, or even one thing? I'd like to fix it if I did.

Yes I may have only been here here for a day longer, but I have not been sitting on the edge of the room.. I have been a continual part of conversations.. In fact this is my historical 1000th post to the forum... You have done 0.4% of the posts that I have in the same amount of time. I saw your coming around tonight and posting over 10% of your entire lifetime posts in support or peddling what appears to be your product was viewed as somewhat suspicious by me. I told you several times I encourage your entrepreneurial spirit but that it should be done within the confines of the rules of the forum.

I still wish you the best in your entrepreneurial endeavors..

I have used this guys wood, I got a mix of charred and toasted, it has lasted a long time for me ....
he seems quite detailed in how he is careful about avoiding oils from the saw to keep food safe ...

otherwise all i have where i am at is willow, spruce and alder. as much as i love doing things myself this is done, so i just have to worry about how long to keep the wood in the liquid.

and i have no connection to the seller or any form of gain from saying that. other than vouching that it was good for me.

good luck

Yup, that's a great product if you don't mind your wood not being naturally weathered first, and you dont wantthe different flavor characteristics of oak imported from france.

Because he doesn't say it is, and that would definitely be a selling point to talk about if he did it.
