coconut taste and smell in jack Daniels

Anyone else ever noticed it? Does it come from the oak or where?

no need just poke a small hole in a bag of JD chips next time you go through the BBQ section at WalMart and give them a good sniff.....

Yes. If you want to smell coconut, you will find it more in JD than in other bourbons.

This lactones you find much more in white oak than european oak. According to a german seller of oak-chips you get more coconut with light toasted wood than with dark toasted. When I look at my JD smoking blocks and compare them with blocks I have from a french red wine barrel, the JDs don't look toasted, only charred. But I know, JD affirm the opposite on their information sites...
Perhaps no toasting only charring is the key?

Oh its definitely there.once you notice it you can't find anything behind it in the smell. Taste wise I find it in the finish. You may be right about the untoasted,I've noticed how light the chunks are also.

I like coconut, and I always preferred Jack over the others common whiskies. Maybe there's something there....
