Silver Irrigation Treatment

Post by bearriver »

Many folks use cooling tanks to irrigate their still. Chemicals such as bleach are added to keep the water from getting funky when in storage.

I'm building a closed loop water cooled PC. It is justifiably uncommon for a PC builder to use stabilization chemicals inside the irrigation. Instead, they use a small strip of silver immersed in the water reservoir to kill any microorganisms. It is a chemical free and permanent solution to things like algae growth.

I am going to scale this and try to apply the principle on home distilling equipment. My plan is to take a sealed 55 gallon drum full of water, and let it sit with some real silverware hanging from a string. If it keeps then I'll quit using H2O2 for storing water.

Why not just use copper mesh? It'll give you a very large surface area for the copper ions to diffuse from.

Copper is algal and bacteriostatic almost as much as silver. At it costs a lot less.

Hey bear,
Does your SOH know what you're doing with her silverware set? LOL

Why not? I'll try that in another drum.

They are garage sale pieces with no corresponding set. Nobody will ever notice my treachery as usual...
