Rum barrel selection.

Post by FreeMountainHermit »

Been doing quite a bit of reading about rum and the many of them out there as well as aging in barrels which has me asking if barrels selected for rum are the sames as those selected for whiskeys.

Type of wood,char,toast,..etc.

TIA, FMH.

Most all commercial rum barrels are used bourbon barrels. If you were making a big batch you could probably try to buy a small, say 5 gal or so, once used bourbon barrel from a craft distillery. That isn't to say that you couldn't age in glass using your own newly charred or toasted sticks though, because lots of people here do that for rum.

I got a 5 gallon used Bourbon barrel from Balcone's and a used 8 gallon Black Swan barrel from Woodinville Whiskey.
Both are great, the Black Swan leaked a little at first but it really did a great job on my rum in 7 months.
I've transferred the rum to the Balcone's barrel to finish for the next 5 or 6 months (right, 8 gallons is greater than 5 gallons - I also put some in glass for easy access).
I had a single malt Whiskey in the Balcone's which is now resting in the Black Swan barrel.
Not sure exactly why but the rum came out a golden color while the Whiskey came out reddish brown.
