After playing with the equations a lot and mucking about with a Leibig for a couple of days it seems to me:

The website calculator is mathematically right but recommends condensers that are too long as it uses a heat transfer coefficient (HTC) for glass not copper. It matches my measurements if you put an HTC of 3000 W/sq m in it.

BTW, 850W/sq m per degree C is what you get from 0.8mm of glass.
Other people can talk about how to expand the destiny of mankind. I just want to talk about how to make whiskey. I think that what we have to say has more lasting value.

Anyone who tells you measurement is easy is a liar, a fool, or both.

Better to build one too long than too short.

Yeah. Also, have discovered a major flaw in my measurements, with help from DeepSouth and Martimer.

The problem is that my experiments were made with water, and this website is not about distillation of water. Alcohol coats the inside to the condenser and reduces the HTC. The HTC is not constant along the length. My cutdown Leibig is now borderline too short ... If anyone is interested in this, take a look here http://homedistiller.org/forum/viewtopi ... 2&start=30. I have this ambition that one day I'll understand a Leibig and will post when that happens. Till then: all my posts are wrong.

In the UK the coil inside a domestic hot water tank is a copper coil, readily available as a spare part. Ready built coil jacket - all you need is to fit a suitable inner coil.

Mine is a bit excessive really, 7 foot so that is 21 foot of 3/8 cores, good for over 8kW in a compact 1 cubic foot volume. :D
wow. thats some build
