That air might have a bit of oil in it TB. Maybe a air pump for a fish tank might work better. Just thought , do you have an oxy acetylene torch set up, you could use the o2 from it.Truckinbutch wrote:Bobbywolf , we got so many ways you are just bound to like some of them .
S S , I haven't injected any o2 . Got an air compressor . Suppose that would help as opposed to buying bottled o2 ?

Or blow up some balloons attached to a hose and release the air from that into it. My brother has a paint and body shop and uses 3 or 4 air filters filled with desiccant and kitty litter to keep the oil out of the paint guns but I don't think I would even use that air for a wash myself.corene1 wrote:That air might have a bit of oil in it TB. +1 Corene. I would be apprehensive about an air compressor for aeration.
But I wouldn't worry a lick about using one of these: http://www.lowes.com/pd_91314-717-OX9__ ... Ntt=oxygen" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" rel="nofollow
The threads on the top are left-handed, so using a standard propane fitting won't work. But the hardware store also sells the fitting (with included valve) too.

edit - add a link for the valve: http://www.williamsbrewing.com/OXYGEN-R ... -P700.aspx" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" rel="nofollow

I think Corene won the prize here . I no longer have a cutting outfit . AirGas raised my rental to $285 a year for 2 tanks and I told them to shove their tanks up their ass . They also refused to refund my initial deposit on tanks from 30 years ago when I first got them .

How long does one of those O2 bottles last?still_stirrin wrote: But I wouldn't worry a lick about using one of these: http://www.lowes.com/pd_91314-717-OX9__ ... &pl=1&Ntt=" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" rel="nofollow

8 to 10 5-gallon ferments per bottle. How long depends on ferment size and desired 8-12 ppm (parts per million) O2 volume.Kegg_jam wrote:How long does one of those O2 bottles last?still_stirrin wrote: But I wouldn't worry a lick about using one of these: http://www.lowes.com/pd_91314-717-OX9__ ... &pl=1&Ntt=" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" rel="nofollow
And also which stone is used. I have the .5 micron stainless stone, so it injects very small bubbles. A coarser stone, like an aquarium stone, has much larger pores...faster O2 flowrate...more foam, less dissolved O2.
When you buy the O2 tanks, always get a couple so you have a spare on hand in case you run out during the aeration. But you propane users have the same dilema to contend with already.

Re: Do larger washes ferment faster?
It isn't just the size of the fermenter, the shape of it has a large effect as well. Larger breweries, when they change fermenters, have to change *all* of their fermenters that they'll use for the same kind of beer, as there can be such a wide variety of different final flavors if the wort comes out of different sized/shaped fermenters. Sometimes they'll roll with it and just blend the result.

Re: Do larger washes ferment faster?
After rereading all this, I will add something. When I mix up my 55 gal batches, I do so 5 gals at a time, dissolving a few bags of sugar in each as I go (No hot water in the garage, so I go one bucket at a time). This would very much aerate the whole mixture from the getgo. There would be much less aeration (O2) if I were to mix it all in the barrel. I'm confident this is beneficial to the yeasties in their initial aerobic stage as they multiply.
This is likely contributing to the faster runs, in a large vessel.

It will work but will take much longer to infuse the same amount of oxygen. Remember, air is comprised of (approximately) 20% oxygen and 80% nitrogen ... so 1 minute of pure oxygen requires more than 5 minutes of bubbled air to introduce the same amount of O2 (since not all O2 in the bubble will be in contact with the wort).Truckinbutch wrote:I haven't injected any o2 .
