Re: Siphoning hose
Good Morning All. I just use food grade plastic hose to siphon if I need to. normally when I make ethanol based washes I have a pail with a plastic "tap" in it and I will open and let it run into my boiler pot. I have a great idea though for my grain mashes to strain. I have a large plastic mesh sack that fits into the pail. these plastic mesh sacks are used for making wine to lift it out and separate the grapes, raisins etc. I put one in the pail and add about a gallon of cold water and after I cook my mash and let it cool, I pour into the sack/pail. after about a week or ten days, I have a pully system suspended from the ceiling where I secure the sack and lift it out of the pail to allow it to drain. BOOM no grain in the wash and I will let it sit for another week to allow everything to settle and finish fermenting.

Quick Tip: If you are siphoning out of a large bucket/barrel (I use a 50 gal blue food grade barrel) it can be very hard to pull a siphon using just your lungs. Cut a small slit/hole in the end of your siphon tube about 4"-6" from the end, just large enough to press fit the tip of an air compressor blow gun into. Angle the air nozzle out the end of the siphon hose and blast away. It will create a venturi and start the siphon very quickly!

I have found a stainless steel racking cane on a online sales site. I'm keen to buy it but before i do i would like to know if there is a good size tube to get? Is there too big or too small? The cane i am looking at is 80cm long and 1cm od. Cheers
