Intrigued by the bubble plates

Post by copperlover1 »

I just can't hold out any longer. I have to build one. Going to chuck up my 4" ferrule and cut a recess for the plate.

Father's Day quote. "Son when you take it out of the chuck it's a chuck key. When you leave it in it's Thor's hammer". Going to cut it to fit a 4" diameter plate .025 thick. Should fit right in under the Teflon gasket.

You have my attention
Are you going to build bubble cap plates or sieve plates?

Bubble caps. I am thinking I will just copy the ones with the built in downcomers. I really like the way they look. I just have to work out the sizes.

Sounds like an interesting project, especially since you have a lathe.
How many caps are you going to use per plate?

I'am not sure. I have been reading trying to find what size works best for 4" pipe.

If I remember correctly, on a 4" plate stilldragon uses either three procaps or four normal bubble caps
You might want to have a look at their design.

Hounddog I bookmarked the pipe firing site. That's awesome. Shadylane thanks for the video link. I have been digging thru my junk pile for a perticuler piece of coppe tubing. It's some weird size that fits either inside a 3/4 or outside a 1/2". It's a tight fit so you can solder it. I know it's in there someplace.

With copper you need to be bashful, Heat it until its red, cool it then bash it
Long story short, make it the size and shape needed.

This is how I've been doing my 4" plates for a few years now. They work really well.

Thanks guys for all the great info. Shadylane I read your rambling post last night awesome stuff I can't wait to see how your other plates do. Great pic squeezins. What does the downcomer and upcomers look like and do you have any dimensions.

I found my missing pipe. Just not sure what to do with it. I wantd to use it to make stop rings to hold the upcomers in the plate.

Image downcomer are 3/4 pipe and 1" cap. The up comers are 1/2 pipe with 3/4 bubblecaps.

Just my opinion
Five 3/4" bubble caps and a 3/4" downcomer, like squeezis using,
will out perform a large single cap with a built in downcomer.
I'm not sure about using 3 or 4 smaller caps with built in downcomers,
I haven't experimented with that yet, but it looks like a good idea

I solder everything in place . I braze the riser tubes and use stay brite #8 on the caps. There is 1000°f melt temp between the two so no chance of the tubes coming loose when you solder the caps

squeezins,
That's cool. I read your build post on the other forum. I was going to leave a great job comment but I can over there yet I'm traped in the newbie section.

downcomer are 3/4 pipe and 1" cap. The up comers are 1/2 pipe with 3/4 bubblecaps.
I know this was an old post but I just ran across it. Squeezins what brand caps did you use for the bubble caps here. The ones I find are more rounded and not as near appealing to the eye. I really like yours. Sorry it wouldn't let me include your picture due to the size.

squeezins - Those plates look fantastic. Would you be willing to detail the dimensions of the build (hole size, count, etc.) of both the cap and the upcomer? Also, are the caps soldered to the base plate?

You could just make one large diameter cap using copper pipe. I'd bet the circumference of one large cap would be close to the total circumference of multiple smaller caps. Obviously a ton of smaller caps would have more circumference. I looked for the link to the basic design I used to make mine, but i can't find it. Basically it's one large cap with a central downcommer.

Just curious is that a Clausen lathe. Looks to be a 1400 series.
