distillation run help
Hi Gents, I will be doing a distillation run today and need some help. I have 6 liters of stripped product ranging from 75% abv to 20 %. I am using a pot still for the distillation run, my max minimum of back wash for cover the element is 12 liters. So I've kept that in the keg. Will adding the 6 liters say 50% abv average to 12 liters of back wash be safe. what estimate of abv would I get? I own a hydrometer but hard to use it with 2 inch keg opening to measure. I don't want my mash to be over 40 perfect as I am scared it could possible blow on me? Any advise is good advice here. Thanks

Re: distillation run help
6 liters at 50%ABV + 12 liters of 0%ABV (I'm assuming you've stripped the backset clean of alcohol) gives you:
6 x 50% = 3 liters of alcohol in 6 + 12 liters, or
3 liters / 18 liters = 16.67%ABV.
Your hydrometer may not accurately measure this because of the accummulation of solids in the backset.
Also note, I've assumed that there is no alcohol in your backset. This likely is not exactly the case, depending on how far down you stripped it. But, I doubt that there was much remaining in it. So, it is a "safe" assumption.
