green after oak

Post by Steve3730 »

I tried an HD google but couldn't find anyone that has experienced this before. My brother bought a 1 liter barrel and we added our distilate to it. let is sit for 6 weeks and removed. the whiskey is very dark with a greenish blue color. I took some heads from the same batch and aged on a sprial and there is no green/blue hue to it. I sampled his barrel whiskey at 125 proof while it was of course strong it had good flavor and was very vanilla forward.

Did we just over oak it? Hoping the color isn't anything bad and its still safe to drink. I'll try to post a picture later

Thanks

How did you prepare the barrel for its first use?

The greenish tint soulds like the remnants of the aged oak seasoning, which sometimes can look green when young. Your whiskey probably washed some of it out.

Does the barrel have a tap? If so, what is it made of?

I have the opposite experience. I have 3 casks from BarrelsOnline. They are made in Mexico. I have one 1-Liter and two 2-Liter casks, all three of "medium char". Judging by the wood shavings that came out during rinsing and prepping the casks I would say that "medium char" was accurate. My 125 proof AG corn whiskey was pale yellow after 8 weeks. In my most recent batches (usage #2 of same casks) I aged to 10 weeks and still have a pale color akin to "Mellow Corn" or Platt Valley if you've had those brands. So I am surprised by the comment of such dark color after only 6 weeks unless you did not rinse them first? After you soaked the barrels to tighten up the seams was the water that came out dark in color?

prepped the barrel by letting water soak in it for about a week, water did come out with some color to it. I don't know how dark it was my brother drained it.

Yes there is a wooden tap on the barrel
