Supplies confirmation

Post by pointhunter75 »

I have a 15.5 gal sanke keg, gonna use a camco 5500 element, updated 10,000 scr controller with the built in heat sink with fan. I want to add a 120v pc fan from my old desktop, so I need 10-4 wire to the controller and from controller to the keg/element correct? I'm gonna have to run a wire from the breaker box down the wall and add a plug there. Can I use 10-3 there? I have an open 30 amp and 60 amp open 240v breaker, I'd use the 30amp right? I'd rather use stranded wire instead of solid since its easier to deal with. Oh and it's a pot still with leibig condenser with 1/2"inner 3/4" 37" outer jacket. I also want to add a 30amp 2 pole kill switch and a light.

I'm a little fuzzy on the math but 30 amp is good for your 5500w.
If it's not issue though I'd go ahead and wire up the 240/60 in case you ever want to add another element. Some guys add the extra element to aid in warm up time and just kill it when the start to close in on temp-- no need for another controller

30a is lots.

5500w will burn a little over 21 a at full smoke.

10/3 from breaker box to the control box. you need neutral if you want 120vac at the controller for a fan and light.

10/2 to the element

* 10/3 has 3 conductors and a box ground, 10/2 has 2 and a box ground here...in case you call it something different there.

stranded at that size is deffo easier to work with.

a single throw double pole switch in the control box is a good idea

ammeter goes on the wire before the SSR.
I finally quit drinking for good.

now i drink for evil.

10AWG is good for 30 Amps.
DO NOT USE A 60Amp breaker on #10 wire!!!!

In Canada by code you only load a circuit breaker to 80% of the breaker size.
5500w / 240v = 22.92A
22.92A x 1.25 = 28.65A
Therefor you can use a 30A breaker and 10AWG wire.

To clarify, I'm in the U.S. I noticed on the lowes site, some wire listed as 10-3 had only 3 total wires and some would have 4, etc. So should the numbers indicate how many wires excluding the ground or including it?

Typically wire packaging will be labeled 10-3 w/ground if there is an unshielded ground conductor. This would mean there are actually 4 wires inside the insulation sheath. Three conductors and a ground.

Ok Thanks alot. So I'll need 3 wires and ground from breaker to plug, same from plug to controller with fan, 2 wires with ground from controller to keg. Got it.
