Adding oats to a ujssm?

Post by Shovelhead89 »

I'm in my 8th generation of ujssm and I heard that adding oats to the grain bill can smooth it out a bit, even if it's a sugar head like ujssm. I was thinking of adding some oats to my next run, anyone have any experience of doing this?

I've done it several times with rolled oats from the feed store. Replace the spent corn with same amount of oats. A peated malt also makes a nice drop when added

Was their much of a difference? Did you prefer the mix to straight corn?

I have done this several times.. and I prefer both. It is a nice change. After eight generations you should have some put back so go ahead and give it whirl. I have also added wheat to some and barley to others. I now make my UJSSM with 2/3 cracked corn and 1/3 rinsed chicken scratch. and the scratch is a little different mix in every bag. So now my spirit runs are just a little different every time and I like that. This hobby never gets boring.

I prefer the different mixes to the straight corn because it adds a complexity of flavors to the whiskey

With oats is how i make mine. 2/3 corn to 1/3 oats works great . Half and half has almost too much mouth feel. It also makes the sweetness hang around longer.

How do you know what oats to replace when doing subsequent generations? The spent corn changes colour and sits on top of the grain bed. Does the oats act in a similar fashion?

Not personally but someone here has im sure. Somebody even added peated barley. One of my favorites is mixed grain chicken scratch. Its got cracked corn ,milo ,wheat and oats.

If you want a change from the reg UJSSM, try the sweet feed recipe. I think you will be pleased, it also improves after gens and IMHO makes a richer and more complex drink. The best I even made I added some rye.

I'm getting ready to do my first ujssm. Will cracked corn form tractor supply work. I was told to look for air dried not gas dried. Or go to a feed store. Not sure where to buy. I will try sweet corn after I get this one down. I want to get stocked up for compairing.

I also red sweetfeed whisky post. I like it. Want to try that one also. Thinking about changing my yeast from Fleshmans bread yeast to superstart distillers yeast. What are your thoughts about that.
