Cooling and transferring option for 26 gallon grain-in mash?
Hi,
we have a 26 gallon jacketed boiler that we plan mashing in. Almost everything is setup, but we are still wondering how we're going to cool to pitch temp and how we will transfer to fermenter.
We know know plate chiller won't work with grain-in mashes. What are you guys recommending equipment to cool to pitch temp a 26 gallon in-grain batch? If we're using a countertop wort chiller like this: http://www.homebrewtalk.com/showthread.php?t=577942" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" rel="nofollow
how can we pump that out? Also, is 1/2 diameter enough for grain-in (rey/corn) mash?
A normal brewer pump can't really handle solid if I'm not mistaken. Are there any alternative?
Thanks in advance.

What is being used for heat transfer fluid in the jacketed boiler
Can it be used to cool the mash

Water. But I've heard using the jacket to cool was not really effcient. Isn't the case?
Also, we don't have an agitator..

I think we will try to build a simple peristaltic pump as well a countertop wort chiller. Is this seems like a good idea?

I mash, ferment and distill in a hybrid baine marieBirzzz wrote:Water. But I've heard using the jacket to cool was not really effcient. Isn't the case?

The water jacket does a good job of cooling the mash
When I agitate the mash with a drill powered stirrer, it works even better.

You could build a spiral wound drop in wort chiller out of copper tubing. Just run cold water into one end of the coil and drop that thing inside the cooker.

Is it essential to force cool the mash ?

Time works, but increases the risk of infection. Deep souths solution is easy cheap and effective. valved water through the jacket would be nice too for a permanent installation.
Shady's solution of doing it all in one is the easiest for sure.
don't waste your time trying to pump corn with anything less than 1 1/2" flexible impeller. and grind it fine...crack corn wears impellers fast.

There are no impeller in a peristaltic pump. Would that make it a better candidate?

so...never seen a peristaltic pump that big, but corn will plug a 3/4" line no problem, the pump sucks the water out and the corn plugs the hole. done.

Thanks for the added info.
Geez, nothing is easy... Is there another viable option under 500$?

I use a 50 foot 1/2" immersion chiller. Can you ferment in your mash pot, maybe if you add antifoam? Cuz thats the dream way to do it, no pumps, no drips, easy peasy.

I have always just waited for the temperature to drop naturally I seem to get a better starch conversion that way I've never had an infection problem and even if you did sometimes it turns out great I know with my rum and sour mash I deliberately infect it

... or from CSST. It's easier to wind and, depending on how quickly you want to drop temp, it's cheap enough you could build two or three and run them simultaneously.
