I'm probably the exception in that I have a 4" ptfe gasket between my stainless steel boiler and my copper pot still riser. I have to put my gaskets through regular thermal cycling. Most people here probably only use ptfe gaskets in column stills that have a separate fill port, so they never have to take a hot gasket and place it somewhere appropriate while it cools.

Which is more dangerous
A PTFE gasket that's likely to leak alcohol vapor
Or having a food grade silicone O-ring touching the alcohol vapor.
PTFE coated silicon O-rings work the best but are expensive
I buy tri-clamps, ferules, and silicone O-rings, it's only logical to wrap the O-rings in ptfe tape.

I bet these are also pricey.

Hi,
I do not understand why using PTFE Gasket is more dangerous, this site is recommending using them, for example in my case I use 2" sanitary PTFE Gaskets between the poles and purchased a sheet from eplastics and cut out a gasket out of it, why do you say constant thermal cycling is not good for these gaskets ?

In my small boiler unfortunately it leaks vapour during distilling, I am thinking to wrap some tape over the PTFE gasket maybe that makes it a little bit flexible. Is there another way to do this ?
