Designing A recipe: Honey Bear Bourbon
This is a Diastatic Power (DP) exercise of how ShineonCrazyDiamond may have designed his popular drink, Honey Bear Bourbon.
Here is a good, short read on what Diastatic Power is.
Honey Bear Grains and Their DP:
7 lbs. corn ---->0
0.5lb Honey malt ---->0
1 lb. rolled oats ---->0
1 lb. white wheat malt ---->160
1 lb. red wheat malt ---->180
1 lb. pale malt ---->140
Total weight = ---->11.5 lbs.
One of a bourbon's parameters is to be at least 51% corn. [(7 lbs. corn) / (11.5 lbs. total)] x 100 = 60.8% corn. So we're good there.
Next, let's see if this recipe meets the minimum 30 DP requirement needed for good conversion.
Too few malts will leave us below the 30 DP minimum and convert poorly.
Keep in mind that any malts that are cooked (such as with the corn, for flavor) will lose their diastatic power and cannot be used for calculation.
Diastatic Power Calculation:
[(Malta weight x DP) + (Maltb weight x DP) + (Maltc weight x DP)] / total weight = DPtotal
[(1 lb. x 160) + (1 lb. x 180) + ( 1 lb. x 140)] / 11.5 lbs = DPtotal
480 DP / 11.5 lbs. = ---->41.73 DPtotal This is above 30 DP, so good conversion will take place.
I hope this helps someone with DP calculations as much as other members have helped me.

A good informative post, at least for me, as I've been wanting to do a all grain for a while. It explains more than just follow the recipe and you'll get there and saved me the research time. Learning curve kinda thing.

By the way~ I forgot to mention that DP is indicated as degrees Linter, or °L.
